Growing Prosperity and Broadening the Tax Base

I support growing Saanich’s tax base through responsible economic development rather than relying primarily on higher property taxes to meet increasing spending pressures.

Residents and businesses face significant affordability challenges. At the same time, Saanich must maintain services, renew aging infrastructure and prepare for population growth and climate-driven disasters. A stronger, more diverse local economy can help generate revenue, create employment and distribute the cost of municipal services more fairly.

Support Local Business

Saanich should make it easier for responsible businesses to establish, expand and remain in our community. That means clear regulations, predictable timelines, efficient permitting and a constructive municipal point of contact.

Council should also support vibrant commercial areas by coordinating transportation, streetscape and land-use decisions with the needs of small businesses and their customers.

Diversify the Economy

Economic growth should extend beyond residential development. Saanich can build on its strengths in technology, advanced education, agriculture, tourism, film and media and environmentally sustainable industries.

Partnerships with UVic, Camosun College, First Nations, business organizations and regional agencies can strengthen workforce development, attract investment and create opportunities for young people.

Employment and commercial lands should be protected and used effectively. Mixed-use centres can add housing while also providing shops, services and workplaces close to where people live.

Ensure Growth Pays Its Fair Share

Economic and population growth also create new infrastructure and service demands. Council must consider the full costs and benefits of development, use fair development contributions and coordinate growth with transportation, utilities, public safety and protecting parks, greenspace, tree canopy and natural ecosystems.

Economic development, combined with careful spending and long-term planning, can reduce pressure on existing taxpayers and help Saanich remain prosperous, affordable and resilient.
