Brendan Ralfs for Saanich Council
Transportation That Works for Everyone
I support building a safe and efficient transportation network that protects emergency access and improves mobility for drivers, transit users, cyclists and pedestrians.
Saanich residents' transportation needs differ based on their needs, abilities and destinations. Transportation policy should expand practical choices without treating any one mode as less important than all others. Success means safer streets, reliable travel times and better connections, not simply moving congestion or risk from one road user to another.
Put Safety First
Emergency vehicles must be able to reach people quickly. All transportation projects should maintain and strengthen access for police, fire and ambulance response.
Everyone should be able to move around Saanich safely, including children, seniors and people with disabilities. I support evidence-based improvements such as safer crossings, accessible signals, sidewalks, connected cycling routes, better lighting and appropriately designed traffic-calming measures.
When residents identify a recurring hazard, Saanich should investigate it, explain its findings and provide realistic next steps. Longstanding concerns should not disappear between departments without a clear response.
Keep the Entire Network Moving
I will prioritize public transit operations that can serve all Saanich residents, including an aging population and people with disabilities.
After emergency services and public transit, Saanich's transporation system should equally address the needs of drivers, pedestrians and all micro-mobility users. Drivers and cyclists are both essential parts of the transportation system. Roads must be properly maintained, bottlenecks addressed and construction coordinated to reduce disruption. Work to expand cycling networks should continue, but at a pace that allows balanced improvements in other areas.
Connect Growth and Transportation
New housing density must be accompanied by the transportation investments required to support it. Communities accommodating growth should receive safe walking and cycling connections, effective transit service and improvements to roads and intersections.
Plan Regionally and Transparently
Transportation does not stop at municipal boundaries. Saanich should work with neighbouring municipalities, the CRD, BC Transit and the Province to improve regional connections and coordinate investment.
I will support clear priorities, transparent project selection and public reporting on costs, schedules and results. Every transportation investment should improve safety, accessibility, reliability or network capacity, and residents should be able to see whether it delivered.
